What is an internship?
An internship is a supervised work experience related to a student’s major or overall career goal. The internship can be part-time or full-time, paid or unpaid, but the integral piece to an internship experience is that a student is doing meaningful work over a consistent period of time.
Main internship components include:
- Internships need to be 10-15 weeks in length with a minimum of 10 hours a week at the internship site
- Internships must align with the student's academic schedule while accommodating IWU breaks unless otherwise agreed upon with intern. Academic semesters are as follows: Fall (September-December), Spring (January-April), Summer (May-August). Click here to view a full 2009-2010 academic calendar.
- Internship work must directly align with the student intern's major academic program, with no more than 15% of the work focused on clerical activities
- Students earn academic credit for the internship experience and are expected to complete academic work in conjunction with their internship
- Since student interns contribute significantly to your organization, compensation is strongly encouraged, though not required
How can my organization benefit?
Your organization can benefit in numerous ways by providing an internship. A few of those benefits include:
- Increased visibility for your organization on IWU's campus
- Year round source of motivated pre-professionals
- Opportunity to screen potential employees
- Ability to invest in and mentor future professionals
